GPS
I'd like to buy a GPS for personal use and to teach myself how to use it. Does anyone have a recommendation? Does using/having a GPS present a security problem?

renters insurance
I have a question about renters insurance. Would you recommend getting it? How does renters insurance affect ones privacy if a claim has to be made?

... It all depends on the level of privacy you are after. If you get insurance, the insurance company needs to know who you are and where you live. However, the possibility of being tracked down by this information is very small.

GSM Cell Phones about to be compromised
FYI...“a research scientist at a Californian security research firm H4RDW4RE, and a member of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) in Germany, is behind the effort to crack the A5/1 encryption technology used by GSM, and he plans to release the keys publically on the Internet by the end of the year.

The goal of the exercise, according to Nohl, is to highlight the vulnerability inherent in GSM technology and to encourage mobile phone operators still using the system to upgrade their digital phone system to 3G, which has better encryption, or to use the more advanced A5/3 encryption technology instead of A5/1.

GSM phone networks in the U.S. include AT&T and T-Mobile. Commercial tools that decrypt GSM communications have been available for some time, but they cost from $100,000 to $250,000. When Nohl's project cracks the key and publishes the code book on the Internet, it will be possible for almost anyone to get the encryption key for any GSM call and eavesdrop on the call or read SMS messages.

LLCs and Tax ID
RE: 6845 Mac, here in NJ we have a similar problem. In order to register a car and title it in an LLC, you need a Federal Tax ID number (with almost no exceptions). Doesn't matter if you are doing business with the LLC or not. Problem: once you register the car in the name of the LLC, NJ Division of Taxation sends you letters. So does the NJ Division of Revenue (similar to Secretary of State in most other states). Both want you to "register". If you register (unless you use nominees), there goes your privacy! If you don't register, then if you ever get hit by another driver (and you or your insurance company needs to sue him/her), if your LLC is not registered you cannot use NJ courts (not to mention giving the insurance company grounds to not cover you)! Not to mention that every insurance agent I have spoken with insists that you need "commercial car insurance" if the car is registered in the name of the LLC. (There goes a whack to the bank account - NJ has some of the highest auto insurance costs in the entire country).
Q-1. To all those out there in NJ, have I missed something?
Q-2. Any ideas on how to deal with this?

... For some reason, a small cluster of states NY,NJ,PA,SC seem to be causing more and more trouble lately, in contrast to the rest of the country (except Iowa and to a lesser extent Florida.) In some western states, there's not a blink of an eye when you list an LLC name, even with a ghost address overseas.

Registering a Car Without a SSN?
Where in the USA can you register a car without having to show a tax id number for the LLC or the SSN of the person trying to register it?

... None that I known of, any more.

New Job at a big company

After some searching, I recently landed a new job at a moderate-sized company. I have filled out all the paperwork with my mailing address (CMRA) only and have had no problems. I even passed a background check!

(Side note: I love how having a certain northeastern state's license forced the background check company to get MY permission -- on a notarized state form -- before they were able to access my driving record!)

NM LLC and Nominee
I am about to purchase a NM LLC and I am not sure if I should purchase it and put it in my name or have my nominee purchase it and put it in their name and then sell it to me? What would you suggest?

BTW: Thanks for the great site! Just purchased HTBI for cash at Barnes and Noble.

... When you order an LLC, NO NAME is connected with it. You therefore do not need a nominee.

However--at least with orders to Rosie--you will receive an official-looking receipt to show you really own the company. This information will not be seen by anyone else and you may never need it unless you buy real estate. However, it you do not want even Rosie to know your name, then ask her to send you the receipt in blank. (It won't look as official however, if you have to write the name in later.)

should insurance match DL or tags?
1) If your driver's license is from state A and your car is registered (with LLC) in state B, should your insurance be with state A or state B?

2) Although it's advisable to have separate LLCs for each car, if you sell a car, can you keep the LLC it was titled in and use it again for your next car?

... 1) The insurance should be in the state where you live, and use the car.

... 2) Yes.

I use a VISA gift card for many online transactions. I don't know if it's exactly the same card you're using, but I just "register" mine on their website with fake info. Of course, you then have to use that same fake info (address, name, etc.) whenever some place needs it to "verify" the card.

Costco Membership
My experience for the Executive Membership went well and when I asked about the DL, I was told it was for check cashing purposes. This makes sense, since if you write a bad check, they want to be able to find you. I told them I will be using only cash and would prefer not to fill that out. They said ok, got my cards and have only used cash. Now, if I can only walk out of there w/out spending $100+!

Tax ID Needed to Register Car in NM?
Do I need a tax id for my NM LLC? If none is needed, where in the USA can I register a vehicle in the name of a NM LLC without a tax id number?

Thanks for all your good work on helping people to protect their privacy.

... I have never heard of a tax ID being needed just to buy a car. Only if you will use it for a business (such as a taxi or a delivery vehicle) would a tax number be needed. If someone told you the LLC MUST have a tax number, try a different office.

MailVault
Reading through the questions, I came across #5151 regarding MailVault. This site proposes to give you free gmail like email but with offshore servers and PGP encryption. Sure enough, a quick internet search brought a bunch of scam alerts. Be careful! Always think "is this too good to be true?" Search "MailVault scam"

Don't Blow HTBI with a DWI
All:

It is getting the time of year for Christmas and New Year parties. Just a reminder a DWI Can ruin any attempts at HTBI should you drink, drive and get stopped. A few drinks are not worth an arrest record. Not to mention you could kill someone including yourself.

Just plan ahead and have a DD or a taxi service phone no. available. I have found that a taxi cost me $8.00 to $18.00 one way. Much less than the start of trying to get out of a DUI.

I never have them drop me off at my exact location.

Sprint gave cops GPS data on customers 8 MILLION times last year.
Privacy advocates and career criminals alike are in a lather over reports that between September 2008 and October 2009, Sprint Nextel ponied up customer location data to various law enforcement agencies more than 8 million times.

Visa prepaid gift cards
For the past four years I have been paying for Microsoft Windows Live Hotmail Plus service with an unregistered Visa All Access gift card.

Each year Microsoft sends me an email and reminds me that in ten days, they will deduct $19.95 from the credit or debit card listed on my account. When I receive the notice, I buy a $25 Visa All Access gift card and put it on my account. I did so last week.

I just received a notice from Microsoft stating the card did not work and to add another card to my account or they will cut off my service.

Is anyone familiar with this particular card? Do they now require it to be registered in order to work? More important, does anyone know of any gift card that works these days with registering it that I can use here? Thanks.

How to Make a Virtually Untraceable Phone Call
I haven't tried this, and it is probably overkill for most people. However, for people who have to make important phone calls to friends, family, or government agencies, but are fleeing stalkers or otherwise MUST remain under the radar, it might be worthwhile. It seems like it would work.

What Yahoo Keeps on You
This should give you an idea of what the big search and advertising companies keep on you. This document provides a "menu" of the various types of private customer information—email, chat logs, ip addresses, etc.—that Yahoo is able to provide to requesters. The document is designed for government eyes only.

Perfect Privacy
I wanted to give a warm thank you to whomever posted the fantastic article about internet security recently. After reading the article, I signed up for perfect-privacy.com, a VPN and it's simply amazing. I have very limited technical ability, yet my entire internet is now protected. I did have to set up my outlook email for encryption (to use their servers), but it wasn't that difficult. Additionally, my iPhone is now using their VPN as well. The cost is about $15/mo if you sign up for two years and I believe it is well worth it. The only downside is a little speed loss, however you can easily turn it on and off.
