washington state dmv
JJ, Does a driver who is from outside Washington state, who decides to register a vehicle at Washington DMV have to have Washington plates? And if so, would this not make the driver's car, who is located in say, New Jersey, conspicuous?

... Yes, to the first question, and probably, to the second.

NM LLC Register Agent Renewal
I don't understand a few things. After reading your books on how to be invisible I was under the impression for the last 7 years to, pay cash, get rid of credit cards, buy vehicles & real estate with a NM LLC, and to avoid purchasing online with debit or credit card.

I have a few NM LLC which Kitty was the RA. Now Kitty has retired. I've been informed that to renew RA the new register agent only deals with online credit card transaction. What is the point?

Prior to ordering another NM LLC, is there mailing address to renew? Very important.

... Rosie always accepts cash or money orders by mail and I had assumed Michael was also doing so. I tried to contact you but the email you listed does not work.

Re: Michele/Staples
Good going! I used to have a Staples Club (?) card, stopped using it, and have consistently declined their offers of one. (Lately, it seems, some retailers will give you such cards without requiring ID.)

When my old laptop died, I went to a pawnshop from which I've bought for years (yes, they have some of my info, mostly outdated), because I wanted something with WinXP.

I paid cash, and haggled them down to somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 less than they were asking.

Laptop works fine (they have any computers "scrubbed" before selling them).

Community involvement & being listed on websites
I am stuck as to how to deal with my current situation. Any reasonable suggestions are most welcome.

I am very active in local denominational affairs, including being president of an organization with its own website. I am also the webmaster. I recently changed it so that I am not listed by name as the webmaster and set up a webmail account just for the organization, rather than using my secondary webmail account that I had been using. The officers of this organization are listed not only by name but our congregation/city are shown by our names, as well. I've more than a year remaining on my term as president.

I'm going for HTBI Level One (aside from the ghost address). I get very little mail at home, all my bills and such are via online statements. All packages on things I order are sent to my office (although I have ordered pizza and there might have been one package sent to my home in error). I have a landline with an unlisted and unpublished number (although the phone is always turned off and when I move next, I will just get DSL). I use my iPhone as my primary phone, and the location finder is always turned off (unless I'm trying to get directions somewhere, which is rare). I rent a nondescript condo (no names are listed by doorbells at all), drive a very basic car (although the color is somewhat flashy and I have to remove an old bumper sticker). A ghost address is overkill for me, but I'm going to get a PO box when I move next.

Also, has anyone had any issues with changing their bank statement & credit card billing addresses (I'm paying it off) to a PO box? A friend mentioned to me that she was given quite the hard time when she tried to change it. She ended up leaving it for the time being and just going to online statements, but the bank will still occasionally send a mailing to her home.

Excellent computer buying experience at Staples
I just wanted to report the excellent and anonymous computer buying experience I had at the Staples office supply chain today. This stood out after all of the negative experiences other have had various places.

I currently have a laptop, but it has my full real name on it (as home file - it's a Mac), and it cannot be changed. I chose to get one of the small netbook computers. The brand is Acer, model is AspireOne. It was $299+tax at my local Staples store. They happened to have them in stock. I had tried out the computer on a previous visit.

After firmly responding that I did not want the extended warranty, I paid cash (all $20 bills), they did not even ask for my name, address, or phone number! I was in and out in about 15-20 minutes. I came home and added Firefox (with AdBlockPlus and NoScript add-ons), as well as Microsoft Security Essentials (free and no registration needed!) that works with the MS firewall already installed, and Spybot Search & Destroy. I named the computer something other than my legal name and refused to register it. I'm going to order an IronKey flash drive and I'll be in a much safer place with my computer and online than before.

Re: 7651--Andie/Consumer Reporting
Hi, Andie.

A consumer reporting agency (CRA) are those which keep track of your credit history and rating (Equifax, ChexSystems, TransUnion, etc.)

Anything from employment to credit you may have had to civil judgments will be recorded.

As far as I know, the only way to stay off one is to never have a credit card or checking account in your name, and certainly never have a judgment against you.

Some information will be kept for seven years; others for up to ten (and the CRAs are not always diligent about that).

Please: If I am mistaken, someone please correct me.

Fingerprinted for Library Books
Children, 4, 'to be fingerprinted to borrow school books from library' Children as young as four could be fingerprinted to take out books from a school libaray.

By Andrew Hough Published: 8:00AM BST 28 May 2010

Critics labelled the plans 'appalling' and a waste of resources.

Students in Manchester are having their thumbprints digitally transformed into electronic codes, which can then be recognised by a computer program. Under the scheme, pupils swipe a bar code inside the book they want borrow then press their thumb on to a scanner to authorise the loan. Books are returned in the same way.

The scheme is being trialled on junior classes at Higher Lane Primary in Whitefield, Bury, Greater Manchester. Officials confirmed it is due to be extended to all pupils at the school, one of the areas largest primary schools, with 453 pupils aged four to 11.

School authorities defended the scheme on Thursday, and moved to reassure parents that the voluntary system, is heavily encrypted or coded and that no images of fingerprints would be stored. But critics said they were “appalled” at the system, developed by Microsoft which is also being trialled in other parts of the country.

“This is quite clearly appalling,” said Phil Booth, national coordinator of NO2ID, a privacy campaign group.

“For such a trivial issue as taking out of library books the taking of fingerprints is way over the top and wrong.

“It conditions children to hand over sensitive personal information.” He added: “The money for such a system could be spent on actual school resources. How about some more books for the library instead?

“This needs to be rolled back or stopped. I would argue there is no justification for such a scheme. But Lesley Isherwood, the school headmaster, defended the system, saying it was introduced as a more efficient way of books being borrowed from the recently renovated library.

She confirmed it would be extended to all pupils, adding that parents would be given the choice to opt in or out. "We have researched this scheme thoroughly. It is a biometric recognition system and no image of a fingerprint is ever stored. It is a voluntary system,” she said.

"The thumbprint creates a mathematical template. All parents have been written to and we have told them what the system is all about. From the responses we have had there has been overwhelming support."

She added: "We hold a lot of information about children because we are a school. This is no different."

All pupils' details are erased when they leave school. It comes after schemes to fingerprint children as part of payment for their school dinners was introduced around the country.

Another suggestion is listed on pg 51 of HTBI where JJ talks about name an LLC in an alias name, get an EIN for it and then use that to hook up utilities, etc.

For example, get an LLC named "Robert Johnson LLC", get an EIN for that LLC and then when calling the cable company, water, electric company, etc, tell them Robert Johnson and your EIN.

As outlined on that page, you can use that for setting up your mail too. Keep it consistent.

I'd be interested to see if any readers out there have done this in the past. This is something that I'm considering when I move in the next couple of months.

Re: 7590
Just FYI, we own a food concession business selling funnel cakes instead of hot dogs, and one of the drawbacks is having to list your REAL information with the Revenue Dept of each state that you work in for sales tax purposes. I have used a ghost address but they still have my SSN. This is something you can't really get away from. There are very few places you can work that don't have sales tax.

... The best you can do is to always hide your true home address. It appears that you are doing that successfully, so keep smiling!

Money order
What happens if you don't fill out the line on a money order marked "Purchaser's address"? Can the money order still be cashed? Why do you have to put your address on the money order in the first place? It seems like I could right down any address and scribble an illegible signature and no one would be the wiser as to who purchased the money order.

... Nothing happens. I've mailed hundreds of such money orders to my bank with never a problem.

this is what I've done in the past:

make up the name for a property mgt. business such as Jay's prop. mgt. co. Go online to the IRS and get an ein which is given to you immed. use your current address. get the utilities turned on in the name of your new co. acting as if you "manage" the property. if you never file a return under that ein or just shut it down, everything's cool.

New law would require ID to buy prepaid cell phones

A new proposal is being proposed by none other than Charles Schumer that would require an ID to purchase any prepaid cell phone. It would also require the mobile carrier to keep the purchaser information on file indefinitely.

If this law passes it will not only restrict the ability to communicate anonymously (a right in any civilized society), but will no doubt put innocent people at risk since stolen IDs would then be used to purchase phones used for illegal purposes.

I'm sure the law will also be expanded to require IDs for ANY prepaid or gift card purchases.

Utilities nominee problem -

I know I'm somewhat new to this board, and nobody knows me (though that seems to be the point around here), but I'm in a bit of a predicament right now.

I'm moving in a few days and the LLC I would have tried to use to set up utilities at my new place got irrevocably tied to my name due to a theft and a police report I had to file. I don't even know if the LLC would have worked, so I'm looking for a nominee.

I have been trying to find someone to room with me (so they would sign up the utilities) or even just pay someone to be a nominee, but everyone laughs when a stranger asks them to put something on credit in their name.

So I'll just put it out there - not sure if this is kosher or not - but is anyone on here in need of some redirection?

My next step is to try the big deposit route, then the "act as a landlord" route, then try the middle name, since I have not used it in 10+ years. I really do NOT want my social being used. But if anyone is interested in helping me out, I would be happy to meet in person to discuss if you're around Boston.

NM LLC Question
Thank you all for answering my questions as I begin getting my privacy in order. I am wondering if there is any objection to using a NM LLC to manage a current and local LLC that I have? This LLC already has a bank account, EIN (single meember LLC, disregarded for tax purposes) but the state registry will of course reveal my name on it. UNLESS I have a NM LLC that can manage the local LLC and put that entity in place of my name with the state registry. Mr. Luna, is that acceptable wtih the NM LLC's that are purchased from Rosie?

... One LLC can own another, anytime. In Europe, for example, LLCs must be LOCAL but the local LLC can be owned by a NM LLC. However, there is a possibility you may have to sign as owner of the NM LLC--best to check on that, first. (Even so, it may be that your name will not show up in some databases).

#7622 Gyms & ID
Over a year ago I joined a gym without showing ID. I paid for 18 months in advance and even received an additional 9 months free for doing so. Since I wasn't authorizing a bank draft or credit card billing, ID wasn't necessary or requested. I used my real name and a PO Box on the membership form, but could have used any name and address. If you offer to pay the whole membership in advance and they still demand ID, start to walk away. There's a good chance the clerk will bend the rules to sign you on so he can get his commission. Many gyms take your photo, which shows up on the computer when you check in so that someone else can't use your membership card. If that's a deal-breaker for you, make sure you're aware of this policy before handing over the money.

Reply to TJ's ?
Hi TJ, Before I approach a housekeeper, nanny or an au pair with an offer to be my nominee. I first see how trustworthy they are. I get to know them for at least a few months before I make them an offer. Middle aged or older the better I have found. You might wish to use an pseudonym. I tell them that I need a private account (you fill in the story of why) it could be you are dealing with a vexatious litigant and that it can’t be in your name, or an ex- wife with an axe to grind and that you willing to pay them for this. Most of them have been living in the shadows, so they understand the need to be private and that if they scratch your back, you will scratch theirs. I usually start the conversation by asking them how difficult it was for them to get an account, DL etc., and that you too would like to gain the same anonymity. It really comes down to being a good judge of people. If you even have a slight suspicion that you can’t trust this person you’re probably right and should move on.

Reply to Ron / CMRA

Ron,
It's not so much an issue of them releasing your specific information, but instead releasing the fact that it's not a real address (but rather a rented mailbox).

For example, CMRAs registered with the databases will show up in a search by a bank if you try to use one as your "residence" address for a bank account. BSA laws are very strict about this. I've even had a bank suspend one of my accounts because I used a commercial address as my "residence" address! I had to call and give them a residential address before they would unsuspend the account.

Using a nominee won't prevent the address from showing up in databases as a rented mailbox, but you can at least hide your name by having mail delivered in the name of the nominee or a company (for example, if your mail is forwarded there from a far away ghost address).
