Skype, PrivaCash & Private Calls
Anyone ever thought of this?
I have an anonymous Skype account that I bought SkyeOut time with with my PrivaCash card. My caller ID doesn't show up with Skype since I'm communicating through an encrypted web server. Me and the persons I'm talking to address each other by screenname over a public, anonymous wireless network.
An ideal private conversation?

DOB encoded on passports, foiling RFID
[Edited] I received my new (non-chipped) passport a couple months ago and now use it for ID when necessary, makes me feel a lot better not displaying my address to everyone. I remember in your book that you recommended whiting out the birthdate from photocopies that you give people who need them. After careful examination I realized that passports encode the birthdate in the numbers on the bottom of the photo page. Specifically, it's in YYMMDD format, like 760704 for July 4, 1976. This sequence of digits is found immediately after the letters USA in the bottom row of numbers. So white these out of photocopies as well.
As for methods of thwarting RFID chips, I think just wrapping passports and other things in foil is best.

calling cards & caller ID
My experience has been that you are at the mercy of randomness with calling cards and the caller ID they produce. What works with one card might or might not work with the next card you purchase from the same store with the same logo. You need to make a test call with each card each time before using it "for real." My Skype account comes up 000012345 pretty consistently though.

RFID
How can I protect myself from the growing privacy threat of RFID tags? I just got a new credit card from american express that has the chip in it. I am demanding a new chipless one, but what else can I do to detect and or destroy RFID chips that make it into my home?

Government-issued identities
I was browsing through some of the comments here when I clicked on this link regarding a womans experience with trying to protect her "identity" after the theft of her wallet: http://www.christianitytoday.com/tcw/2004/006/11.70.html
I have wondered for years why anyone would build so much "value" around their identity, which really isn't their "identity" at all. However, it's a VERY common phenomenon.
"Identity" theft will be a major problem until there is no longer any value on the government issued identity you have been issued.
After forsaking my government issued identity years ago, I've finally started to get a little bit of a feel for what it is to actually be "free".
My identity has NOTHING to do with who the government says I am, and I no longer use the identity the government "created" for me as a child. This means I don't use credit, take out loans of any kind from financial institutions, don't use my social security number for ANYTHING (except on tax returns-and really, I wish I had never even been issued an SSN, but I was too young to know to object when my parents labeled me with it).
Losing my bill fold will not create any trauma for me, as I will lose nothing more than (at most) a few Federal Reserve notes. And, from time to time, this does happen. The loss is minor, however, and my "identity" is not affected.
I paid cash for my home and vehicles, I live very privately, my children don't go to government schools (where government issued identities are typically required), and if my children continue on the path I try to guide them on, they will never know what it's like to have their "government issued identity" stolen, because they will never have a government issued identity created for them.
JJ Luna's tips for living privately have introduced us to many ways that make living privately even easier. Thanks, JJ. Keep up the good work. I suspect that anyone who lives privately will have little to lose if their wallet is ever lost or stolen.

toll free numbers
Sometimes if one uses a calling card to call a number, there's no caller ID. (1) Might this work for calling a toll free number? (2) What about having an operator connect you to a toll free number to defeat caller ID?
...
(1) If I remember correctly, many cards do not allow a call to a toll free number.
... (2) OK.

Toll Tags
I live in Dallas TX and have to deal with the Tollway regularly. I finally got a tolltag because I got tired of stoping every five miles, waiting in line, paying, and getting a receipt (for business deductions). Do you know if other goverment agencies have access as to the tag as well?
...
Yes, if required, any official agency can get that information. I recall a murder case in which it was proved that the criminal's alibi was false. However, make your own decision on this one. If you have no fear of the law, then it may not matter,

passport
Is there anyway to defeat/disable the chip w/o carrying it in a certain kind of holder?
...
None that I would recommend. It would just cause unnecessary problems when you went through customs.

Facebook able to enable stalkers
If you know someone who makes use of Facebook, they should be terrified when you let them watch this! I initially knew there were some privacy concerns so I limited the kind of information I put in my account, but the site's new features are scary and I'm already ready to close my account for good.

Passports
Re the recent question about whether the new passports have the chip--according to news stories it's in process of being rolled out, and I think August was mentioned as the month in which the rollout begins. So if somebody reports he has a chip in his new passport, that will at least confirm that the rollout has begun. But the absence of a chip in a new passport doesn't necessarily mean there's "still time" to get an unencumbered passport.

passport
Mike,AZ: Just received mine last week. It does not appear to have one. They claim the cover will have a special symbol if it has one. I've read the chips can be made 1mm square so finding it would be hard.

Do all the current passports have the chip yet or not? I've gotten mixed answers.

Although I do not think so, I can't prove it. Perhaps some reader who has a brand new passport can tell us.

vehicle registration
I am relocating to TN and am considering following JJL's advice to title my vehicle in an LLC. Can any TN readers inform me of any specific requirements for accomplishing this? I looked on the TN DMV website and couldn't find any references to LLCs listed.
...
In most states, David, it is very easy to title a car in an LLC.

Bank Account
1)If a person has another one open a bank account for them, what is preventing that other person from making withdrawals and taking the $$$ out since they will know the account info and are the actual legit bank account holder?
2)Let's say that this other person who opened the account for you dies, how would you go about making large withdrawals to emty the account in time and without suspicion to the bank?
Thank you.
...
(1) If you do not trust your nominee, do not use him or her.
... (2) You mention "large withdrawals." I suggest you maintain a low balance and just use the account for paying bills. Do not keep more in the account than you can afford to lose if the nominee should die unexpectedly.

LLC - Vehicle Titles
I am considering forming an LLC and have read your book. Also, followed your website over the last year.
One privacy question remains...
When a vehicle is titled to an LLC and
the LLC is registered to you, isn't the vehicle traceable to you ?
In other words, to file the LLC, isn't an IRS form SS-4 required which requests your SSN ?
...
No, because:
- - - (1) The LLC is not "registered" to anyone. No one's name appears on the documents.
- - - (2) I know of NO reason to file an SS-4 and get an EIN, if you are merely holding title to a vehicle or real estate. This is not required in most states, including yours.

Title car in Texas
I have my New Mexico LLC and am ready to buy a car, to be owned by the LLC, in Texas. The first dealer I worked with balked at selling my LLC a car without providing a Tax ID number for the LLC. While the law in Texas is clear regarding individuals buying cars (an SSN must be provided or a written statement made that the buyer does not have an SSN) I can not find any requirement in the Texas statutes that a company must provide a tax ID to buy a car. The only thing I have seen is a little box on the title application form labeled Tax ID. It seems logical that if Texas does not expect a person without an SSN to get one just to buy a car the state would also not expect a company without a tax ID to get one just to buy a car. I wonder if any reader in Texas has experience in buying a car in the name of an LLC and can offer any guidance.

Pretexting
Pretexting, it can happen to anyone, even a rich and powerful Venture Capitalist on the Board of one of the largest technology companies in the world.
This story shows just how easy it is for someone to get your phone records with only a name, address, and last four digits of a social security number. Scary.
