DMV data sharing
"Does anyone know -- for sure -- that state DMVs share data among themselves? Can you get away with holding a driver's license in two states without the one or the other being the wiser?"
I believe they all do, but there might be minor exceptions. The number that do is increasing, and with the Real ID act, data sharing will be ubiquitous and universal. Every state I know of requires that you surrender licenses from other states when you become a resident of the new state.
Moreover, every state I know of automatically invalidates a driver's license when you cease to be a resident of that state, which means that even if you HAVE a facially valid license, it's not actually valid once you've taken up legal residence in another state.

craigslist privacy 8077 & 8089
"Josh and Seth. Well what can be done if you're selling a house on craigslist and advertising an open house. I mean, I think your example of the craigslist women has to do with men doing something illicit? It then would make sense that thugs could think to pursue such because of the illicit setting don't you think? For legitimate transactions though, you could call the police and identify them.
... Selling your home is an entirely diferent situation than giving the address to a stranger."
-----
Assaults on realtors showing houses are common. In Ohio, open houses were suspended after a series of robberies and assaults by people who target realtors by reading newspaper ads.
Fact is that any time you invite strangers to your home, you increase the chance that you will be assaulted or robbed.
Craigslist is just one of any number of sources that criminals can use to target people. The tactic is obvious, the criminal finds someone who is expecting strangers, pretends to be a buyer long enough to get inside, then pulls a weapon and robs them.
Clearly, one must use good tactics and judgment when inviting potential buyers inside. This is one of the reasons that people use Realtors. It is the responsibility of the Realtor to vet the potential buyer and make sure they are legitimate and are qualified to buy the house BEFORE taking them on a tour of the house.
You can do the same thing by arranging a meeting with the potential buyer AWAY from your home, in a public place, with witnesses. At the meeting, you make introductions and ask for identification from the individuals, explaining to them it's for security purposes. No crook is going to give you ID to copy or allow you to take a photo, and if they refuse, they probably aren't a legitimate buyer.
And, of course, if you do invite potential buyers into your home, don't be alone, and carry a concealed handgun just in case. In any state where you can own one (excepting perhaps Chicago), you can always carry concealed in your own home without a permit.
Just use common sense and be careful.

There are many lessons to be learned here... DMV data-sharing...
Here's the link. The question asked in a post just below this one was whether "ALL" states share DMV data and whether one could "get away" with 2 licenses from 2 different states. In 3 simple words: "DON'T DO IT!"

Miscellaneous Issues - Gyms, Hotels, Canadian Border Crossing
This is just an FYI on some recent experiences of mine in regards to recent issues of discussion on this forum:
I have belonged to 24-Hour Fitness for 11 years. I refuse to use their new fingerprint system, and I have observed many others at the club I attend not use the system either. I am not getting hassled at all about not using it. That may be because, when I renewed my passport I had some extra photos taken and I laminated one of them to the 24-Hour membership card. They just scan the bar code on the back of the card like they have been doing for years. Also, I religiously work out there 3 times a week except when travelling so all the workers know me by sight, which may help as well. I frequently use other gyms on day passes when I travel if there is no hotel exercise room or no 24-Hour nearby. I just got back from a vacation in Montana and the two gyms that I used there did not ask for ID and did not make me sign a liability waiver for a day pass, both of which are unusual in my experience.
During my vacation I stayed at 5 hotels in 5 different towns/cities. Not one of them asked to see an ID when I checked in. Let's hear it for Montana!
After reading horror stories about crossing the Canadian border here and elsewhere on the internet, I was concerned about going into Canada for a day visit to Waterton Lakes National Park, which is adjacent to Glacier National Park where I started the trip. I thought being a woman traveling alone might be a cause for extra scrutiny, but I decided if I was going to have any trouble crossing it would be better to find out when I was only planning a 1-day stay, not a 2-week vacation. I left my cell phone and iPod back at Glacier, but brought my film camera. I used the very small crossing station at the Glacier/Waterton Parks border on MT Highway 17. I had no problem at all. Maybe it was the small, highly rural station; maybe because I was only going to stay for a day; maybe the agent was "impressed" by my occupation (civil engineer); or maybe all/none of the above. I was only asked my hometown, reason for visit, length of stay, occupation, and whether I had any firearms or weapons (I had none). No questions about cash, electronic equipment, previous Canada/overseas visits, etc.
Also, about my passport; since it was renewed in 2004, I have lost about 70 pounds (now you know why I'm so anal about working out!). Aside from a few more gray hairs, my appearance is otherwise unchanged. Nobody has ever questioned my passport ID.

Re: Jury Duty 7776
I found the answer. The AOC (Administrative Office of the Courts) said they only check the driver's license bureau and voter registration to submit people for jury duty.

Licensing a Vehicle
How do you find an Individual Licensing Bureau...instead of a DMV? Do all states have them?
...
Check the Yellow Pages under License Services. And no, not all states have them. I do not think Florida has any. BTW, Florida will ask for your home address, so be prepared beforehand.

re #8082
In Re answer #8082 concerning communications on ham bands: "But, there are legal modes, such as Morse Code and packet radio, that are not as likely to be intercepted. "
This is not true. As a matter of fact, there is a HUGE population of people that do nothing but monitor HF radio bands and specifically decoding CW (morse code) and RTTY (radio-teletype) and I am one of those listeners. I also admin a web page devoted to HF radio listening. CW is easy to decode and some people can do it by ear very well.

NYS DMV
One other point regarding NYS DMV requirement regarding the use of the EIN number ... if it is a concern of yours ask one of your "board members" to obtain it for you. The whole process takes 10 minutes or less on line and you can still maintain your privacy.

NYS DMV
Hi jack, I'm the one Rosie spoke to yesterday regarding a certified copy of the Articles of Organization for NYS DMV. However I see that you have placed a BIG RED ALERT which may not be called for. But you can determine that after I post my experience. I'm not going to post a mini book, just the particulars.
"HOW TO TITLE YOUR VEHICLE USING A NM LLC IN NEW YORK STATE".
1)It will require Persistence and Insistence. There are nearly 40 to 60 offices within the state, pick one ! If you are not successful in one office try another.Be Persistent in informing them that you poses a NEW MEXICO LLC that maintains an "office"(your ghost address)in New York !! If asked for the filing receipt from the NYS DIV.of Corporations(implying that you must file as a foreign corporation), insist that you do not do business in New York which would not require you to register with the DIV of Corporations.
2)Hand them both your Articles of Organization & the Certificate of Organization which has the file number. If they again ask for the filing receipt, point to the Articles of Organization where it state(upper right hand corner)"FILED IN THE OFFICE OF NM PUBLIC REG. COMM." Argue that this is your filing receipt for the State of New Mexico.
3)Be firm in your stance!!!! Don't let them tell you NO. They may at some point call Albany for clarification which is a good thing !!!
4)One last point, have all of your forms prepared before you step to the window. This demonstrates that you know what you are doing and you may experience less questions asked of you. Besides, you should be focused on the questions that will be asked of you in stead of flitting with paper work which could diminish your credibility.
My name is Jack, and I Titled my NY Vehicle to my NM LLC.
...
Excellent information, Jack. Thank you!

Paid cash for the house
I'm a 32 year old who achieved my personal dream of owning a house on the river, cash out.
Of course, the trick isn't in the getting, it's in the keeping.
The home is in my personal name (book read post-acquisition).
It's my understanding that I'm out of luck in terms of privacy on this residence, since my name will always show on a title pull.
Am I incorrect or is there a way to achieve some privacy?
J
...
If you sell (or possibly transfer) your home to an LLC, your name will still be on a title search. However, it will not be on the county website where current owners are shown.

Visibility and Security of Lockbox
This is in reference to Lockbox which I use. I have Windows and Unbuntu 10.04 as a dual boot and by accident I was able to find and access my lockbox in the windows system using Ubuntu. The Lockbox was in the default area assigned by the program, so if you wanted to hide it, I would recommend hiding it in the program folder inside a program. Suggestion 2 is to create a Truecrypt Folder and put the Lockbox folder in there. That should protect all the contents nicely.

Two-way radios, blog post
I think a CB or ham (amateur) radio rig may be what is needed. The problem is, if they are going to be used in Mexico, the users need to find out what the communications law is there, and how well it is enforced, if they want to do anything illegal.
I am only familar with US laws. CB radios do not need licensing or call signs, ham radio does. In the US the FCC is serious about enforcing against violations of the law, especially on the ham bands, and the ham radio community is also vigilant on reporting violaters on the ham bands.
The downside of all radio communications is anyone can listen to them. There is no privacy on the airwaves, unless encryption is used, and that may not be legal (it's not on the ham bands in the US).
But, there are legal modes, such as Morse Code and packet radio, that are not as likely to be intercepted.
