Internet Cafes and Key loggers
This is for those who use internet cafes and type in their information for a bank account. If this device is installed all that you type will be recorded and then retrieved for later use. You can check the back of the computer and if you find such a device LEAVE! If you just copy and paste information onto your browser or use a portable version of Firefox with password protected information that inserts itself, you may not be in much trouble. Either way do you really want to take that chance? Use a your laptop and go to a local wifi if you must. Key logger programs will not help you detect and disable this since it is not a program , so be careful especially if you use the internet at work.

2010 Census
A census worker came to our door step with a GPS device. Yes, unfortunatly my house number is still on the porch. Why would they need the coordinance of your door. This didn't bother my husband. Workers who were asked say they are updating the data base in order to mail you the 2010 Census (regardless of whether you receive mail at your home or use a PO Box). We already have google maps and virtual earth which are scary enough. The Constitution requires that we be counted, I don't believe it says we have to answer personal questions. It's just a $100 fine to refuse to answer. Any thoughts on how to handle the census?

... Use the "search" box and enter "census."

NM LLC
I am eager to use transfer ownership of my vehicle into a NM LLC. California requires foreign companies to register with the state (I think most states do) along with paying hefty fees, when they are doing business in CA. The definition of doing business is very broad so I am wondering if using a vehicle registered in the name of an LLC is wise.

... No, most states do not require registration if the sole purpose is to take title to a vehicle. Is California different? I doubt it but if I am wrong, I'm sure some CA reader will quickly correct me!

GOOG411 now reveals your number
Hi, I've been using GOOG411(800-GOOG-411) for awhile. At first, it wouldn't reveal my number, just theirs(800-466-4411) on the called party's Caller I.D. service. This is now no longer the case, as a recent cell phone call to a business through their service unmasked my cell phone number to the business I called. Has anyone else noticed this lately?

RE: #5817, anonymous email
Okay, I have some feedback from that other forum. One person provided a link to a site where there is a discussion about a rumour that anonymousspeech (dot) com is an FBI sting operation. (See link below.)

Another person had this comment about that rumour:

"Well, the site is up and claims to be in Switzerland so the only way the FBI could do anything is with the cooperation of the Swiss government, who tend to be reluctant to interfere is such matters.

"That said the domain information contacts are all in Japan.

"Use at your own risk."

As I said in #5819, I would prefer that any PGP encrypting/decrypting be done locally, on my own computer, rather than relying on a remote site to do that for me. (How do I know that the remote site can be trusted?)

See link below.

Maintaining Privacy to Move Overseas
I know you are not keen on offshoring, but having lived overseas years ago, I am keen to semi-retire & live abroad. Social Insecurity is no way to retire in the US! Any suggestions on maintaining personal privacy for self and small business in the process of moving internationally? Suggestions on safe places to live a peaceful, quiet life and run a small biz inexpensively and without a lot of interference or privacy invasions? Woman alone, no surviving family, wants to feel safe, and privacy is a boon to personal safety.

... Okay, I CAN help with this one. Head for Costa Rica. Bank accounts there are not reported to the USA, and I have a grandson who will serve as your nominee for renting, getting a car, whatever. For details, contact me by e-mail.

Don, I notice that they state that their servers are still in Malaysia, it's the headquarters that moved to Switzerland.

I would prefer that any PGP encrypting/decrypting be done locally, on my own computer, rather than relying on a remote site to do that for me. (How do I know that the remote site can be trusted?)

Other than that, I know nothing. I have posted a question in another forum, and will report back if I get answers there.

LLC
Would it be a good idea to have the name of your LLC as a common name, such as Bob Smith LLC, creating more "disinformation" or do you think it would lead to problems when using it for registration or property transfers.

... I prefer--and use--only generic names starting with words such as Somerset, Emerald or Seabrook.

However, if you are doing business under a pen name, using an LLC with that same name may be an advantage in certain cases.

Anonymous email?
Does anyone know anything about this company? (See URL, below). They used to be based in Japan, then closed down for a while, and said they opened back up in Indonesia (IIRC). Now they're saying they're in Switzerland.

Nomineeland
What ever happened to Jim's part 4 of Adventures in Nomineeland?

... If I remember correctly, Jim got sidetracked with some urgent problems that had to be attended to. I hope his adventures will be continued in the future.

Florida business checking
I talked to Suntrust bank and they stated my llc would have to be registered in FL to open up a business checking account. i am expeceting a sizable check that is being made out to my wyoming llc.

... If the check is for real estate, insist that it be made out to you personally. (That's what I do, and I don't take no for an answer.)

Re: SecureVoice
This is in regard to securevoice. According to this quote from their site they keep records of all customers, their calls, people they call, so I am not so sure if it would be the best choice-in my opinion. Using throw away phones and pagers is the still the best way to avoid any records being kept. 'Because the system identifies the specific offender on every call, from every inmate phone, investigators can trace any call to a specific inmate.'

RE:: #5804, Firefox tips
I see no problem with using this feature in the Firefox 3 that came with the current upgrade to my IronKey secure USB flash drive -- especially since I have the NoScript add-on installed, and since I only run the IronKey in read-write mode on computers that I trust (my own laptop). (I can use the IronKey on computers that I do NOT trust using its read-only mode and "Secure Sessions" feature.)

I choose to trust the IronKey team; I do not believe that they would have released the latest IronKey software upgrade without thorough testing to be sure that the Firefox 3 version (which is locally installed on the IronKey secure USB stick and can only run once you have entered your IronKey password to access that stick) does NOT compromise my security. I am confident that the local IronKey-resident Firefox keeps its bookmarks, browsing history, et cetera, locally on the IronKey and does NOT communicate them over the Internet to any other computers.

Secure Voice
Ed, search Google using the term: secure voice. It would require more than just installing software on your cell phone. It requires software and hardware on both ends of the conversation.

Firefox tips
From the Firefox Version 3 features page (h__p;//en-us.www,mozilla,com/en-US/firefox/features/#location-bar

Smart Location Bar

"A quick way to get to the sites you love—even the ones with addresses you only vaguely remember. The new Firefox 3 location bar learns as you use it—it’s so highly evolved that we like to call it the “Awesome Bar”. Over time, it adapts to your preferences and offers better fitting matches. Type in a term and the autocomplete function includes possible matching sites from your browsing history, as well as sites you’ve bookmarked and tagged in a drop down. For example, you could enter the tag: “investments” to find “www, fool, com”. Matched terms are highlighted, making the list of results easy to scan. "

Sounds cool huh? What they are not telling you is that the "Awesome Bar" uses your bookmarks and not your browsing history as part of its drop down menu. They are also not telling you that the "Awesome Bar" ranks the bookmarks you visit in order by how frequently you visit them!

(h__p;\\support,mozilla,com/en-US/kb/Cannot+clear+Location+bar+history)

Go to the link below to install an addon which will allow you to clear the location bar (Just add the t's in the h__p, swap the semicolon for a colon and the comma for a period in the web addresses above to go to those sites)

Consulting question
dear sir -- my girlfriend says her dad got an e-mail from you last friday and that it mentioned a discounted fee for consultations in las vegas. i can't afford to fly there but do you ever travel up this way? i have a great business idea and my girlfriend loves it but we need some advice about how to help us maintain a low profile. do you have any discount for young people just starting out, with limited funds?

... Although my fees are normally fixed, please note that on the way to Vegas, I will be stuck with a day to kill in Missoula, Montana. (An 8-hour drive from Calgary.)

If you can meet me there on May 21st, contact me by e-mail [jjl (at) canaryislandspress.com]. We'll work something out to fit your budget.

Bugged cell phones?
I read JJL's monthly newsletter about bugged cell phones; amazing.

According to the Washington Times B. Hussain Obama will have a Blackberry that uses a product from Genesis Key called 'SecureVoice' to keep his conversations safe.

Anyone have some opinion about this product to keep our cell phones secure? If its good enough for B.O., good enough for me? Note: I don't work for these guys and have nothing to gain but privacy by bringing it up.
