car reg. sticker license plate
Something odd here in calif., when you look at the license plate, the 2012 sticker are in two formats: first format is in 2012 & the month,
the second format is just 12 on the right side sticker (this is the one i got) because my DMV car registration address is different from the license address so i always get the car reg. renewal in-person, but it seems the calif. gov't is tracking via these two different formats on the license plates sticker THE FIRST "regular" type of 2012 & month it seems is usually mailed to your home mailing address & the other type of format 12 & month sticker is received via in-person DMV visit or DMV kiosk. Looks like this new tracking just started this year, 2011.

Restitution
The Financial Litigation Unit of the US Attorneys office collects restitution, unpaid student loans/child support, gvmt. fines, etc. The FLU is mandated to "constantly perform surveillance" on those who owe restitution. Does anyone know how the FLU conducts surveillance besides the obvious monitoring of credit bureaus, public record filings, DMV ?

First I'm not a lawyer, I'm not giving you legal advice.
You can obtain a Florida (Non-Resident) Concealed Carry permit, it is good in your neck of the woods. The Beautiful thing about them is that even though you are required to update them within 10 days of moving - you can say your traveling instead, or use a friends address. No one will ever check it (unless you do something to warrant it) plus it is a state issued photo ID with no information on it other than your name, photo and the header at the top.. Additionally while other states want to know things like where you have lived for the past 10 years (not kidding) the application for the "Florida Non-Resident Permit" is half of one side of a page. Annitionally instead of taking a class that requires you to use such things as your SSN all the only training certificate you will need is "Hunter Education Course" class that was passed. If you call up the Fish & Game in your state you can often get new cards sent to you sense most of us outdoorsy types take the class when we are in our early teens so we can go hunting. Then you photo copy that card, as your proof of training. The only other thing that is kind of annoying is that you have to get fingerprinted by a LE either in your state. If you call around no one will do it; However if you call the court houses in your area and ask for the "City-Marshal" he will do it for between $15-$25 he doesn't keep any of the paper work other than a receipt that has very little info on it just to keep up with the monatary stuff in his drawer. You can find there website if you search "my license site" when you click on the page you want the forth paragraph down. they have to send you the application as it is issued to you (ssn) however they are not allowed to put that on the outside of your permit card nor are they allowed to furnish that info to anyone except the Fed's (of course) and the processing staff.
I have had one for over 12yrs, anytime I've been anywhere I've called and let them know, but you don't have to because there is no set amount of time for a vacation or traveling while at work. No one ever show up and checks that you live there and if you tell them that whatever ghost address is your residence, but that you would prefer all your mail goes to your PO Box, because you travel a Lot that is no problem with them as - I've been doing it for over a decade - no problems.
Mail Solution: Get a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) class B, the class B is only 5 questions at the DMV and you can use a straight truck (U-Haul) to take the test. Then where ever you happen to be in the world, you call truck stops to see which one's have mail service, some will let you forward all your pail to them for pick up as you pass through for nothing just show your CDL. It also helps get ghost addresses as it makes it easier to convince people that your always gone and gee it sure would be nice if you could swing by and pick up mail from your wife/kids/family. You can also get ordained online and do the same thing with several ministry organizations who help traveling missionaries any way thay can, place to send mail, or a residence to receive packages, etc.

Solution's
I added an extra fuel tank to my wife's vehicle so that she didn't have to fill up when going through bad area's. Once she was being followed and drove way out in the country until she ran out of fuel. Her pursuer hung back. She took the hose for the tractor and cranked until she felt unsafe and started driving again. Turned around in the middle of the road (empty road) and started driving back the opposite way. Her tail ran out of gas before they reached another town.
Not everybody has "Transfer Flow Bed Tanks" but it would be easy to carry a couple 5gallon fuel cans in the trunk or strapped in to truck bed for such occasions or helping out a friend or family member. Having a 5gallon bucket of mud (with lid) to throw all over your car/truck has yielded good results for me as well. Safety Note: Don't transport fuel in the cabin of your vehicle if you have a trunk or truck-bed.
Answer to Mr. JJL's Question: Not only can LE's turn a cell phone's mic or camera on, additionally they can have gain access to your text history, photos, app's, voice msg's, etc.. So can anyone else, (but) they have to be able to access your cell prior to install software. This isn't usually something local LE's do, unless they are part of a task-force, or Fed's, however it would be easy enough for a stalker to get access unless you were very careful about how and where you stored or charged your cell. On most phones it is undetectable unless you hook it up to a computer and really know something about .exe files, unless you have a phone made by apple in which case you will have an extra app appears (dead give-away) on your phone called Cydia, good reason to not have folders upon folders of places for someone to drag and drop it thereby hiding it if only for a time from it's end user.

Cell Phone and 911
What if you witness a crime or traffic accident and need to call 911 on your cell phone? I have a prepaid cell under an "assumed name" and I always buy new minutes with cash. When you call 911 they always ask for your name, and their system automatically records the phone number you called from. I don't want my real name associated with my cell phone number in any databases, but I'm afraid that if I tell them my "assumed name" and then get called later to be a trial witness or something, I would have to use my real name in court/legal papers, and the two different names would cause a problem for me. I'm not married/engage so I can't use the "maiden/married name" excuse.
...
Do not give ANY name! Just ignore their request and state the facts, then hang up.

Yet another reason to have some cash on hand
If Social Security thinks you're dead, it takes 2-3 months to fix the repercussions, which include your bank accounts being inaccessible!

home-based office
Hi
I have no space for a panic room. A safe, even hidden, will not be a good idea. What do you think of this idea:
Store documents and cash in the junk part of my office. The junk part will have the following 10 or 15 year-old non-working items:
CRT monitor or 14” TV,
large, old-style PC
VHS recorder/player
DVD
large hifi
all can be got from adverts in any newspapers (free to take away section)
Then documents and cash can go in there.
What do you think?
...
Yes, that may be a good idea.

Banking
This would have been a good question in the reader forum. Why not open up a checking account where you are currently living before you move and request that the statements sent on line. More and more banks are doing this, or get an online bank account again before you move. You could get a ghost address, perhaps in Alaska and have the statements sent there.

Pay Card versus Pay Check
Sir, my husband and I are preparing to move to another state, but his new employer only pays using direct deposit to a bank account or a pay card through Money Network if no bank account is had. (We are choosing to work on a completely cash-only basis without a bank account and would prefer a pay check to cash.)In phoning Money Network to ask questions about their pay card, they asked to first verify date-of-birth, ss# and address before proceeding at all, all of which is supplied by the employer to this company. Can you suggest any ways, other than starting our own home-based business (which I am working on), to get around this privacy difficulty? I understand, from several colleagues, that this pay system is becoming fairly standard in many companies. Your help is appreciated. By the way, GREAT book!
...
The main question is, with this system, will your home address be revealed? If not, I wouldn't worry.

Harrassed by the Klan
Dear Sir:
I am being daily harrassed by the Klan in Hot Springs Ar. One of their number breaks in and steals from my apartment daily. They have destroyed two of my automobiles. My apartment, car, telephone are all bugged by spyware. The police say they can do nothing, and that I have to catch them myself. I am a senior citizen. There is lots more.
...
If this is actually true, the only solution is to secretly move. (It would be difficult to PROVE that you are being bugged by spyware.)

Merchant accounts
Hi J.J.,
I run a home-based online business selling health-related products. Is there any way to get a merchant account that would not be at all connected with my name and SSN?
Everything I sell is above-board and 100% guaranteed but it would be nice to protect my identity from all the crazies and suit-happy people out there.
Thanks!

#8541, internet connection
Mr. Luna, I don't understand your response to the subject post. When you say "I carry it with me when I travel, rather than use hotel connections" does that mean you carry a device that CLEAR leases and that you use that when you travel instead of the hotel connection?
...
Yes. I have a modem from CLEAR that I can use anywhere.

Canada Bank Account
In the chapter "Bank Accounts and Money Transfers" JJ writes that it is possible (using the services of data brokers) for someone to access your US bank account to the point of getting copies of the microfiched checks, front and back. Could such brokers also crack into a US dollar account set up in a Canadian bank --- if they had the account number? My concern is that I set up a Canadian account a week ago, but the first deposit was a check written against my American bank. I wanted to see how long it would take for the check to clear, but it just occurred to me I had left a trail. Did I make a mistake from the gitgo by opening the Canadian account with a American check instead of cash?
...
Assuming no one knows you you have the account, I think you are fairly safe. Neverthess, the best way to open such an account is with cash.

vanilla visa
JJ, as a follow-up to an earlier question (#8535) regarding vanilla visas: Why do you say there are "no good vanilla visas"? What specifically is wrong with them from a privacy standpoint?
...
What's wrong is that for many purposes, they will not work. PayPal rejects them, as does Amazon.com, and I suspect many car rental agencies will not allow them either.

LLC in NV or NM>
Good Afternoon,
You mentioned that New Mexico LLC's have better privacy benefits. However, wouldn't it be possible to register an offshore corporation in a foreign jurisdiction and then place that entity as the legal owner of a Nevada LLC? By structuring a couple of offshore corporations through multiple jurisdictions, could you not have similar privacy benefits as a New Mexico LLC? Moreover, it might even be possible to obtain more favorable tax treatment from a foreign jurisdiction.
...
You are talking about thousands and thousands of dollars extra, and all for what? Not recommended!

New Mexico VS Nevada
How do LLCs from NV and NM compare?
...
If you mean for PRIVACY, there is no comparison. Nevada (and all other states except NM) require you to file an annual report which lists owners and their addresses. New Mexico requires no such report, ever.
